  • Arsenal sufered her first FA Cup third-round exit as managerless Championship side Nottingham Forest stunned holders Arsenal at the City Ground.
The hosts took the lead when Eric Lichaj headed in from close range, although the advantage lasted just three minutes as Per Mertesacker followed up after Rob Holding's header had struck the post.
Lichaj reclaimed the lead for a Forest side led by caretaker boss Gary Brazil, the American defender scoring a spectacular dipping volley from the edge of the area a minute before half-time.
Forest pulled further clear in the second half when Ben Brereton sent David Ospina the wrong way from the penalty spot after Holding upended Matty Cash.
Danny Welbeck reduced the deficit for Wenger's much-changed side after Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith failed to hold a through-ball.
But Arsenal's first FA Cup third-round defeat since January 1996 - in a replay against Sheffield United - was confirmed courtesy of Kieran Dowell's 85th-minute penalty, before Forest's Joe Worrall was shown a straight red card in the closing stages for a late tackle.
The defeat means Arsenal will not be able to defend her title which they won ater defeating Chelsea in the final of the competition last season.

  • Thierry Henry has admitted that Alexis Sanchez could be tempted to leave Arsenal and join up with compatriot Arturo Vidal at Bayern Munich.

The Chilean has become a firm favourite at the Emirates Stadium since joining from Barcelona, but talks over a new contract have stalled due to his wage demands.

And while the Gunners idol would love to see Alexis remain at the Emirates, he is aware that the club must play a huge role in making sure him and another superstar stay put. "If he ever leaves then you would think the likes of Bayern are going to come, Paris Saint-Germain," he added. "Maybe joining his friend Vidal at Bayern Munich so we’ll see. But stay… don’t listen to anyone, find a way, stay!"

  • Lucas Leiva scored a rare goal as Liverpool scraped past Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in their FA Cup Third Round replay on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp's men headed into the clash at Home Park on the back of their 0-0 draw at Anfield last time out.

The Reds welcomed Philippe Coutinho back into the starting XI and it was his corner that found Leiva for the latter's headed winner in the 18th minute.

Divock Origi then had the opportunity to put the wraps on an unconvincing Liverpool performance right at the death, but sent his penalty straight into the arms of Luke McCormick.

FIFA looks to UK to kick off big TV money for Women’s World Cup 2019 rights

    By: Spotbits On: 23:46

  •  FIFA has begun the sales process for the broadcast rights to the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France, launching an invitation to tender (ITT) for the UK media rights.
It is an unusual step by FIFA to publicly announce an ITT but the fact it has done so reflects a changing media marketplace in the UK as well as an anticipated and significant jump in the commercial value of the Women’s World Cup.
The last edition of the Women’s World Cup in Canada broke broadcast records in virtually all markets globally, but especially in the higher spending UK market, and England in particular with the English women’s team winning the third place play-off having narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final.
Those World Cup performances generated broad-based viewer interest levels previously unseen for the women’s game in England. That interest has continued into a revamped domestic Premier League structure and dramatically increased media profiles for England’s star players.
With UK nations not playing at the Olympics (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland cannot agree to play under a united Great Britain flag), the women’s World Cup assumes considerably greater importance for those countries.
FIFA will be hoping to cash in on what it believes is a previously undervalued product in one of the highest paying broadcast markets. The Women’s World Cup will not immediately become the money bag that the men’s World Cup has grown into, but it certainly capable of making a major positive contribution to FIFA’s four year revenue cycle it is FIFA most under-exploited asset.
The rights on offer cover TV, IPTV, internet, mobile and radio transmissions. FIFA says it will “select the media company that is best placed to operationally secure the required transmission commitments and to achieve FIFA’s objectives of reaching the widest possible audience and providing the best-quality viewing experience for fans.” That does not necessarily mean the rights will be available for free-to-air terrestrial television only.
FIFA has opened an initial question and answer period from October 11-28, with submissions to FIFA to be received November 3. Negotiations with any preferred
bidders will start on November 7, 2016.

  • If they’re good enough, they’re old enough goes one of football’s well-known sayings.
Thirteen year-old Karamoko Dembélé made international headlines when he made his debut earlier this week for the under-20 team of Scottish champions Celtic, coming on as a substitute in the 3-1 victory over Hearts.
Born in London to parents from the Ivory Coast, the youngster moved to Glasgow when he was five. Celtic’s under-20s coach, Tommy McIntyre named him on the bench because several regular starters were away playing for Scotland’s Under-19 team and he got his chance in the 81st minute.
Dembélé had already impressed in two youth tournaments during the summer. He won the player of the competition at the Bassevelde Cup in Belgium, and the St Kevin’s Academy Cup in Dublin, which featured youth teams from Barcelona, Lyon and Deportivo La Coruña.

  • Rangers International Football club of Enugu, yesterday, broke a 32 year trophy drought, when they beat hard fighting El Kanemi Warriors of Maidugri,4-0 to clinch their 7th league title.
The Flying Antelopes at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium now dubbed,”the Cathedral” in the Week 38 of the 2015-2016 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League final match earned three points to finish with 63 points to top the log.
The victory ended the team’s jinx that has dogged the pride of the East for 32 long years. And the club which means so much more to the Igbo nation, has thrown the people into a frenzy mood.
This comes in the first full tenure of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s as Enugu State Governor which speaks volume of motivational prowess as the helmsman. The 25,000 capacity stadium which was filled to the brim rose to its feet when Chisom Egbuchulum sent Elkanemi keeper in the wrong direction to net the first goal, through a penalty in the second minute,.
Determined to earn the N40 Million price money, Rangers doubled the lead at the 39th minute when,Osas Okoro, volleyed a diagonal shot past the keeper.
However, the third goal came off the itching foot of Chisom Egbuchulum in the 64th minute as Rangers attackers mesmerized Elkanemi defence which was caught napping. Egbuchulum scored from the spot to record an hat-trick in the 90th minute to make it 4-0.
Formed from the ashes of the civil war in 1970, Rangers became one of the two institutions that played inestimable roles in healing the Igbos’ wound – physically, socially and psychologically from the devastating 3-year civil war.
Within four years, precisely in 1974, Rangers had not only lifted Nigeria’s league title, they went ahead to repeat the feat five more times in 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982 and 1984. Their series of conquests did not stop at the league, they replicated it in the FA Cup, winning the prestigious trophy a record five times, in1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, 1983. Coming out from a devastating war, the team became a pictogram for the Igbo spirit of industry and resilience.
Rangers became Nigeria’s most recognizable flag-bearers in international competitions, conquering both at home and afar, and bringing to our shores such great teams like Asante Kotoko of Ghana, Union Douala of Cameroun, Al Ahly of Egypt, Etoile Sahel and Club Africain of Tunisia, El-Marriek of Sudan and so on.
In those glorious years, the Enugu stadium  later remodeled to 30,000 capacity and named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe became the slaughter arena where great teams likes Egypt’s Mehalla saw real wahala.
In those giddy days, Rangers provided the bulk of players to the then Green Eagles, like giant goalkeeper Emma Okala, skipper Christian Chukwu, Aloysius Atuegbu, the Onyedikas (Emeka and Ifeanyi), Christian Madu and many more. By 1984, just within 14 years of its formation, they had triumphed in the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977, after reaching the finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs two years earlier in 1975.
