Ahmed Musa's CSKA Moscow have succesfully defended Russian Premier League's championship, defeating title rivals Lokomotiv 1:0 in final game of the season. The Nigerian winger played 11 minutes, making his return from knee injury. |
Musa was CSKA's only substitution, coming on the pitch in the 79th minute and making his first appearance since suffering the injury in a cup game against Krasnodar a month ago - which is certainly good news for Stephen Keshi and Super Eagles, as there was a small concern that the winger could be unable to play in Brazil. After a remarkable 9-game winning run in the league - coupled with Lokomotiv's and Zenit's shocking defeats to Dinamo Moscow and Rostov, respectively, in the last round - CSKA found themselves top of Russian Premier League for the first time since September before their ultimate game at home against Lokomotiv. An incredible tenth straight league victory would mean defending the title for The Red-Blues, while any loss of points would see Zenit be crowned as new champions as Andre Villas-Boas' side were comfortably leading 2-0 at Kuban at half-time. However, CSKA's Zoran Tosic opened the score in Moscow a minute after the break, scoring the goal which would eventually seal the title for Leonid Slutsky's men. The Serbian international took advantage of some sloppy defending from Lokomotiv's Taras Mykhalyk and fired a brilliant low effort home. Musa helped his teammates hold on to priceless lead until the final whistle, although Lokomotiv's Dame N'Doye could spoil CSKA's big party near the end of the clash. Luckily for the Nigerian's club, N'Doye's shot in the 85th minute only hit the post. Including the appearance in the season's finale, Musa recorded 27 games and 7 goals for CSKA this campaign.
