Shola Ameobi accepts to play for Nigeria

  • Shola Ameobi admits his proud parents could be left with the ultimate in divided loyalties as he prepares to make his Nigeria debut.
    The Newcastle striker is set to play his first game for the Super Eagles in the midweek friendly against Venezuela in Miami, after accepting to play for his country of birth.

    But younger brother Sammy is set to snub the Africans in a bid to take his chance with England, following a call-up to Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 squad.
    they are diverse decision that could even see the brothers lining up against each other at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

    And the elder Ameobi said: "We’ll have to wait and see what happens. If it did happen, it would certainly be a divided household".
    The 31-year-old played for England Under-21s but never earned a call-up to the full squad.
    "I’m really excited. Nigeria is where I’m from and I’ve never forgotten my roots", he added.
