Jermain Defoe scored a astonishing hat-trick as Tottenham secured their first win of the Europa League with a 3-1victory over NK Maribor.
Defoe's hat-trick took his Tottenham goal tally to 126, which places him above him above Teddy Sheringham to eighth on the club's
all-time list. Martin Chivers with 22 goals is now the only man with more goals for Spurs on the continental scene with Defoe bagging 15.
Emmanuel Adebayor was given his first start of the campaign and partnered Defoe up front as Spurs went in search of goals. It was a decision that paid off as the hosts poured forward early on - Adebayor, Defoe and in especially Bale key in stretching Maribor and picking holes in their defence.
Bale had his header cleared in front of the line before seeing a cross get past his team-mates after an incredible control.
Defoe then headed Adebayor's centre straight at Maribor goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic, but would not be denied a minute later.
Visiting right-back Martin Mejac was affording Bale far too much time and space, and punishment arrived when the Welshman crossed for an unmarked Defoe to angle a fine volley across Handanovic.
